TRONC MANAGEMENT, and Tipping Solutions
A properly-run tronc is the difference between paying NIC on tips (15% employer, 8% employee) and not paying it at all. It's also the difference between a clean HMRC audit and fines of up to £5,000 per employee, and leaving yourself open to disputes and tribunals from staff. Tip4's tronc management makes the savings real — and the audit trail less painful.
"More for your team. Nothing from you."

NIC SAVINGS CALCULATOR
Run the numbers on your tronc.
Same calculator pattern as on the Restaurants page — single input, three output lines.
NIC savings + RoundUp uplift
Based on UK NIC rates from April 2025: 15% employer, 8% employee.
*RoundUp may increase the tip pool by as much as 30%; we use a fairer 15% for this assessment. Indicative figures only — RoundUp may over or underperform depending on your venue. Platform and processing costs still apply.
WHY USE A TRONC?
Tips paid through a properly-constituted tronc are exempt from employer and employee NIC. That's a 23% combined saving on tip volume that goes straight to the team and the business. The catch: the tronc has to be properly constituted, independently run, and compliant with various legislations and also HMRC tax code. These are:
Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 (EATA)
HMRC Guidance on tips, gratuities, service charges and troncs E24 (HMRC E24)
Employment Rights Act 2025 (ERA2025) – comes into force 1st October 2026
15% employer NIC saving
On every pound of tip volume run through a compliant tronc rather than payroll. For a venue with £20,000 monthly tips, that's £36,000 a year. Real money, which your business needs more than the tax man.
8% employee NIC saving
The staff side of the same saving — workers take home more for the same gross tip. £19,200 a year on the same example. Not a perk; a structural improvement. Pay your staff more, keep them happier.
Independent troncmaster of record
A compliant tronc needs an independent troncmaster (the law requires the direct employer not to control allocation). We act as troncmaster — or sit alongside the venue's nominated person, whichever the policy says. Either way, we take a lot of headaches away from you, and help you support and administer this.
Avoid the £5,000-per-worker fine
Non-compliance with EATA carries Tribunal-route penalties up to £5,000 per affected worker. Our compliance solutions, are therefore an investment, not a cost.

How to pay for Tip4 – you choose
Customer or merchant — your choice on who covers the small platform cost.
Tronc compliance and the payment infrastructure underneath it do cost us money to provide, but this doesn’t have to be an awkward conversation. We allow you 2 clear models on how this can work.
Merchant absorbs
The traditional model. The merchant/venue pays the platform fee out of its margin. Customer experience is identical to a no-fee transaction. Simplest for high-margin venues. Given the savings on NIC, and the benefits of keeping your staff happier, many choose this route.
Surcharge to customer
Not all businesses can afford, or their model doesn’t support a way of absorbing the costs. So we can show a clear pathway on QR codes (coming soon) or on terminals to show transparently to the customer the flow of funds alongside the tip. Worker receives the full tip as agreed with the customer, the venue pays nothing. The pay rise that doesn't cost you a thing. See Tip Surcharging.
Pricing – Our pricing is Tiered to help support both SMEs and Enterprise clients alike. We offer a range of solutions, terminals and acquirers. All pricing is bespoke depending on your requirements, integrations, and our solutions offered. We will review your requirements and can advise on the best approach to drive both savings and value in your solutions.
Real talk
The NIC saving alone usually pays for the platform and more. We generally advise the monthly model, as this feels ‘cleaner’ to us, but equally we want to support all types of businesses, and all decisions they make. Equally, we have to be mindful of how tips work in all settings, and as with all our other solutions, we know one-size-fits-all, often means a lot of businesses feeling unsupported - we prefer to help everyone.
Tip4 is a service and solution provider. We provide support, advice, guidance, but ultimately the tipping policy is yours. We will help make this more compliant, but please be aware that without the correct process and justification (which we advise) your tipping policy could be called into question at a tribunal. Being compliant can also mean you would still lose at tribunal, given the nature of a tribunal process, and other mitigating factors beyond our control.
